What is denier?

Denier is a unit of textile measurement that is equal to the mass in grams per 9000 metres of fibre. Originally derived from the weight of a strand of silk, it has been adopted as a way of indicating the density, thickness or "sheerness" of stockings and tights. The higher the denier measurement, the more opaque or thick the hosiery. Sheer stockings might be around 15 denier, whereas opaque tights have a denier of anywhere between 40 to 100.
