Baking Trays & Tins FAQs
How to care for baking tins and baking trays
Decent pots, sheet pans, loaf pans and baking trays should last for at least ten years - but only if you look after them properly. Here are our top three tips when it comes to caring for your bakeware at home:
- Always hand wash your baking trays: Dishwashing powder and tablets can be very caustic, and the temperature inside a dishwasher can get up to 70°C. That means it's easy for your bakeware to get damaged, especially if they're non-stick. To preserve them, hand wash your baking trays and equipment whenever possible.
- Only use non-scratch cooking utensils: Non-stick baking trays are also particularly easy to damage with metal utensils. Help your cake pan last longer by only using a plastic baking knife or silicone baking tools when removing food from the baking tray. Our baking utensils and gadgets range also has everything you need to ensure no nasty scratches occur.
- Steer clear of spray oils: Avoid using aerosol spray oils when you're baking, especially on non-stick baking trays. The thin oil film can bake onto your trays and will build up over time, becoming really difficult to remove. Instead, use cooking oils such as olive oil, canola oil or butter and margarine.
How to clean an oven tray
As mentioned, handwashing is the best way to preserve the surface of your baking tray or oven tray. If your oven tray has a build-up of baked-on or burned food, you can clean it by soaking it in warm, soapy water to first loosen any debris. Follow up with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar, and lightly scrub in a circular motion with a sponge or scratch-free scouring pad. Don't be tempted to use steel wool or metal utensils to remove anything that's baked on as you will damage the surface of the oven tray.
What's the best baking pan material?
When it comes to bakeware it can seem like a tough choice deciding on the right oven tray or baking tray material. Common fabrications and compositions include aluminium or steel with non-stick coatings, as well as ceramic, glass and silicone. Each has their own features and benefits - learn more with our informative ovenware buying guide to help inform your baking tray purchases.
